The muscles can be strengthened and trained to contract in proper order to give you stable foundation for movement.

It is more important that you do quality core exercises than that you focus on quantity.
Start with simple core exercises which you can do anywhere at anytime.
Bridging is one example:

Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. |

Tighten your abdominals, then push with your feet and raise your buttocks up a few inches. Hold this position 5 to 10 seconds as you continue to breathe normally, and then lower yourself slowly to the floor. Repeat 10 times. |
